Great stuff about the lyrics, but man, when it goes to that part at 5:50, it becomes this _whole other thing._ I still get goosebumps at the end of the song when it gets to the instrumental fade-out, and I can remember _exactly_ where I was when I first heard it.

Sounds to me he didn't want to come out and tell her how he felt because, if she didn't want no more than friendship, then, as with so many people in this kind of situation, things will never be the same ever again, and the odds would have been be them drifting apart. So, instead of upsetting the equilibrium, he decided to keep the balance and maybe try to let her know other ways, in which she didn't pick up on.

I don't know the first drum fill is not even what makes the drums great on this song, it just fits so well with the drums coming after it and especially all the versions of the fill coming after it are really classy yet still feel they have that anger in them.

I bought a Lone Justice on '45 with a picture sleeve, then the '33, then the cd when I was converting. It was the mid eighties, so record stores had both at that time. Patti Smythe was another powerhouse singer at the time. I just don't think the industry knew what to do. Maria was ahead of her time.
